One of the best things about staying in Middle Tennessee — specifically Mt. Juliet — is that you're right in the middle of some genuinely great day trip territory. Nashville is 20-25 minutes away, but there's a whole region worth exploring beyond the honky-tonks on Broadway.
Here are some of our favorite day trips that are worth the drive when you're staying at Duggin Homes.
Jack Daniel's Distillery — Lynchburg, TN (about 80 miles)
Lynchburg is a small town that feels like it hasn't changed much in decades, and that's exactly what makes it worth visiting. The Jack Daniel's Distillery is the centerpiece, and the tours are genuinely interesting — they walk you through the entire production process including the famous charcoal mellowing. Ironically, Lynchburg is in a dry county, so tasting samples are what you get on the official tour. The town square has good shops and a few solid places to eat.
The Natchez Trace Parkway
The Natchez Trace Parkway runs right through Middle Tennessee, and it's one of the most scenic drives in the South. No commercial traffic, no billboard advertising, no gas stations — just 444 miles of history and forest. You don't have to drive the whole thing. Even a 30-mile stretch through Middle Tennessee is a beautiful afternoon, especially in spring when the dogwoods bloom or fall when the leaves change. There are hiking trailheads and historical sites along the way.
Franklin, TN (about 30 miles)
Franklin is one of the most well-preserved Civil War towns in the country. The downtown square has excellent independent restaurants, high-end boutique shopping, and a walkable historic district. Carter House and Carnton Plantation are both significant Civil War sites that offer tours. It's an easy half-day trip and a nice contrast to Nashville's energy.
Mammoth Cave National Park (about 2 hours)
If you're willing to make it a longer day, Mammoth Cave in Kentucky is about two hours north and absolutely worth it. It's the longest known cave system in the world, and the cave tours range from easy walking routes to more adventurous options. Book cave tour tickets in advance — they sell out, especially on weekends.
Shiloh National Military Park (about 2 hours)
Shiloh is one of the most important — and most preserved — Civil War battlefields in the country. The park is spread across 4,000 acres with over 150 monuments. It's a sobering and historically significant experience, and the visitor center does a good job of contextualizing the battle. The drive through the Tennessee countryside on the way there is worth it on its own.
Chattanooga (about 2 hours)
Chattanooga has completely reinvented itself over the past few decades. The Tennessee Aquarium is one of the best freshwater aquariums in the country. Ruby Falls and Rock City are classic Tennessee tourist draws that are genuinely fun. The Walnut Street Bridge is a pedestrian bridge over the Tennessee River with great views. It's a solid full-day trip.
